Holland - Payne Family Cemetery

Narrative

This cemetery served the Holland and Payne families. Henry and Mary Holland were immigrants from England. At his death in 1852, Henry Holland had two parcels of land. One was 173 acres and the other was 91 acres. It appears Mary continued to live on the farm with her seven children. Mary died in 1897, some 39 years after her husband. In 1907 their childeren sold the remaining land of 135.5 acres for $1,500 but reserved the cemetery. (deed linked below)

In the book Prince William, Its People and Its Places published in 1941 the farm is mentioned as being called Bowling Green but known locally as the Holland Place. It states near the ruins of the house is the burring ground containing tombstones memorializing Henry Holland, Mary F. L. Holland, and Annie E. Lipscomb.

The 1937 aerial image below shows the farm area. The cemetery is noted as #1, #2 is the access road to the cemetery which exists as a trail as of 2025, #3 is modern day Haversack Lane which follows the same path as it did in 1937, #4 is likely their farm.

1907 Deed reserving the cemetery including right of ingress and egress.

1897 Deed following the death of Mary Holland
